The History Of
Basketweaving
One of the earliest
known art forms of all times is Basketry or Basketweaving.
Beginning as far back as the Neolithic period, baskets were
weaved by the Egyptians and are still used today. By definition,
Basketweaving is the manufacture of baskets through weaving,
plaiting or coiling. Materials traditionally used include cane,
reed, rush, sisal fiber and wood splint. Each culture adaptedthe
art of basketry to the materials accessible to them.
Basketry is a very simple process easily grasped by beginners
who are then able to develop their own skills and design their
own patterns with practice.
The various designs for baskets vary with the multitude of uses.
They are designed and used for household furnishings, food
storage, utensils, religious functions, and even transportation
and clothing.
In areas such as the Southern Appalachian Highlands in America,
craftspeople are making baskets to restore the manner used by
our forefathers. The Federal Government has issued grants to
support this
historical art form.
Examples of basketry can be found in all cultures. Regardless of
the use of the finished basket, they always have been and are
still to this day an expression of culture and art.
